Decided to start over on the mural

Got a wild hair and painted white primer over the whole thing this morning. --But I promise I can re-do it by Friday!! Hah, seriously, just wanted to post this "before" picture -- difficult, now, to remember the wall without a mural, isn't it? We are painting in the final details this week. On Wednesday, Karen Nevis will do a walk-through with artist John Ton, and any glaring issues, or subtle details, will be on the artist's "punch-list" for completion by Thursday or Friday of this week.
The mural will be "unveiled" --? Unveiled? Seems pretty "unveiled' already! --oh well, anyway it will be dedicated and celebrated at 2:00 PM on Saturday, November 20. The Public is invited.

Happy Halloween at the mural!! Boo-oo-ooo--ooo!

This wacky Halloween crew livened up the mural for me! Just a couple more days and we're callin' it "done"!! Wow! What an amazing response we're getting from the public... everyone loves the images, the people, the scene of Capitola ...as the mural takes its final form. Look for an announcement of the unveiling / dedication on November 20, 2 PM (tentative date)!! Woo-Hoooooo!! (and BOOOOOO!!) happy Halloween!

Begonia MANIAAAAAA!!! Oct. 26, 2010

Introducing Mardeen Gordon, our newest begonia painter!! Only 3500 begonias to go, Mardeen!
Angelica is glazing (darkening) some of the myriad begonias so the figures will show up better. Great job, Angelica!

Details as work progresses

I call this first one 'Running Girl':

Wow, looks like she could stand to run a little:
Hah, that's just the angle I see when I'm up close to the mural!

Angelica paints in the underpainting for "her" hair which we decided to use in order to make the girl look a bit more "girlish", as the actual model's hair was tied up tight in a bun...

A detail of "Mom and daughter" -- isn't that just exactly how we hold a kid's hand?? The kid's the only one in the mural who will be looking at the viewer. The rest are looking "into" the picture and heading for the beach.

WATCH FOR:  volleyball players and Metal-Detector-Guy!!

Vandal Defaces the Mural

Apparently somebody has more paint than brains! --I added the eyeballs for the decency of this blog. ANGELICA ROCKS!! I am out of town, so she got the call and shot right over and blocked out the grafitti! even got to ride in a cop-car!! Woo-hoo! What would we do without you! -Anyway, to me, the handwriting looks like that of a very inexperienced "tagger" -in fact, taggers are typically very respectful of mural art. Whoever you are out there doing this, why don't you come by when I am working, and express whatever it is that's bugging you? Maybe we can come to some kind of meeting of the minds. Additionally, please consider that this is how I make my living, so adding hardship to my work is like asking someone to work overtime without pay! Bottom line, would you please stop? I mean, what did I ever possibly do to deserve this??  Think about it.   ...Thanks -John Ton
